Davids Daily Dose - Sunday August 29th

1/. Good explanation from Jonathan Chait why the media is hammering Biden harder than Trump....
Photo: Sarah Silbiger/UPI/Bloomberg via Getty Images
Over the last week, the media has hammered Joe Biden with relentlessly critical coverage of his pullout from Afghanistan, resulting in noticeable drops in his approval ratings.

2/. This is interesting -  Michael Klare argues there won't be a Cold War with China, as the Chinese government and military will be too
busy dealing with the climate disasters that are coming to their country....
In recent months, Washington has had a lot to say about China’s ever-expanding air, naval, and missile power. But when Pentagon officials address the topic, they generally speak less about that country’s current capabilities, which remain vastly inferior to those of the U.S., than the world they foresee in the 2030s and 2040s, when Beijing is expected to have acquired far more sophisticated weaponry.

3/. Jordan Klepper goes to an anti-vaxxer rally....and once again proves you can't fix stupid....six minutes....

4/. "The Experts Weigh In".....Tom Tomorrow....

5/. Bill McKibben does a weekly newsletter on climate issues, and his lead story in this one is chilling. I have been asked why I don't
have any hope that we can solve the climate warming issues, and it's because of the power wielded by the fossil fuel industry.
They own most of our politicians, so expecting meaningful action is an uphill struggle.....
Travellers arriving in an unfamiliar city used to worry that they’d climb in a taxi and be driven to their destination by the most circuitous route possible, racking up an enormous bill. That’s pretty much what Big Oil and its allies in government and the financial world are doing with the climate crisis—in fact, at this point, it’s the heart of the problem.

6/. This blog post is truly excellent - it explains the Afghanistan pullout but a lot more, like the origins of our discord, Ronald Reagan's
legacy, the endless greed......more like a philosophical discussion than a story.....
Great descriptive writing, and well worth your time.......

Afghanistan

People don’t care.

At best it’s a high grossing film with hugely declining numbers after opening weekend that never plays on pay cable or a streaming service, that you can seek out if you want to but most people don’t make the effort.

This is radically different from Vietnam. I remember watching the exit on television in a world where I never watched television, because there, but by the grace of god, went I.

The draft. You could get your ass shot off in a futile war. Why?

7/. Horse dewormer will cure Covid.....or so Fox News says....

“You are not a horse. You are not a cow,” the Food and Drug Administration tweeted on Saturday alongside a link to a page on their website explaining “Why you should not use Ivermectin to treat or prevent Covid-19.”

Why? Because Ivermectin, a medication usually reserved for deworming livestock, is responsible for a spike in poison control calls in Mississippi as people duped by conspiracy theories have purchased the drug and ingested it, hoping it will treat or prevent Covid-19 — something the drug is not proven to do.

8/. So why do these idiots think Ivermectin will help them? Why do the QAnon idiots say "I've done the research and it's true"?
One of the reasons is this example, a nerdy and factual analysis of Ivermectin which is pure academic research with no clinical trials, evidence or conclusions....
I know one of you will understand this....maybe....

The causative agent of the current COVID-19 pandemic, SARS-CoV-2, is a single stranded positive sense RNA virus that is closely related to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV). Studies on SARS-CoV proteins have revealed a potential role for IMPα/β1 during infection in signal-dependent nucleocytoplasmic shutting of the SARS-CoV Nucleocapsid protein (Rowland et al., 2005Timani et al., 2005Wulan et al., 2015), that may impact host cell division (Hiscox et al., 2001Wurm et al., 2001). In addition, the SARS-CoV accessory protein ORF6 has been shown to antagonize the antiviral activity of the STAT1 transcription factor by sequestering IMPα/β1 on the rough ER/Golgi membrane (Frieman et al., 2007). Taken together, these reports suggested that ivermectin's nuclear transport inhibitory activity may be effective against SARS-CoV-2

9/. More relevant are websites like this, "America's Frontline Doctors", who are pure
lunatics but if you are an idiot you will
seize on this BS as proof you are right, and justified in taking a horse dewormer....

10/. Seth Meyers does a great segment on 1/ Ron DeSantis, 2/ Fox News and 3/ Ivermectin.....a very good 11 minutes....

11/. Lindsey Graham....the Daily Show evicerates this despicable crawler with his own words....
If you can stand it, 8 minutes....

12/. How things have changed.....for 50% of the country....

13/. A Rolling Stone story on hydroponics, and how this will be the [terrifying] future of farming....this story sounds convincing, but they leave
the more inconvenient facts about hydroponics till the last 1/4 of the long story....

When Jonathan Webb arrived at the 500-acre former cattle farm he purchased in 2019, it was essentially an empty green field. He bought an RV and set it up on a hill with the water tower behind him and Daniel Boone National Forest out front. When massive, earth-moving construction started the same year, Webb joked with locals that he was building a giant communication tower to the aliens, helping other intelligent life find Morehead, Kentucky

But Webb’s real interest was saving Planet Earth.

14/. Fox News invented antifa, but there seems to be an actual antifa cell in Oregon that is attacking journalists and fighting the Proud Boys - notable in this disturbing story and video about rioting in Portland is the complete absence of the police. It's like a decision was made to let these two nasty groups have at it.....
This past Sunday, while covering a protest in Portland, Oregon for our video partner News2Share, a reporter named Maranie Staab was attacked by members of an Antifa-affiliated group. After complaining about a report she’d done in Colombia in conjunction with TK News, they maced her, shot paint at her, and threw her to the ground.

15/. The best TV on netflix, compiled by EW....

They're some of our favorites, and we hope they'll soon be some of yours too.

Today's video - don't be too put off by the hippie look of this guy - the moves he makes with this hoop are amazing......
Shot at Venice Beach, CA.............

Today's "getting old" joke
A seventy-eight year-old man is sitting on a park bench, sobbing, when a
young man walks by and asks him what's wrong.
Through his tears the old man
answers, "I"m in love with a twenty-five-year-old woman."

"What's wrong with that?" asks the young man.

Between the sobs and sniffles, he answers, "You can't understand. Every
morning before she goes to work, we make love... At lunchtime she comes
home and we make love again, and then she makes my favorite meal. In the
afternoon when she gets a break, she rushes home and we have more sex, the
best an old man could want. And then at suppertime, and all night long, we
make love."

He breaks down, no longer able to speak.
The young man puts his arm around
him. "I don"t understand. It sounds like you have a perfect relationship.
Why are you crying?"

The old man answers, again through his tears, "I forgot where I live."

Today's short bonus joke.....

So this 78 year old guy is having coffee with his friends and they see him take a viagra out of his pocket cut it into 4 pieces and take a piece with his coffee.

Shocked, they ask him if he is still having sex?

"No," he said.  "I just want it to stand up a little bit so I will stop peeing on my new golf shoes."

Davids Daily Dose - Sunday August 22nd

1/. Republicans and anti-vaxxers are going to a new tactic of denial...
Anti-vaxxers in Swampscott, Massachusetts. Photo: M. Scott Brauer/Redux
In the middle of August, as the Delta variant began driving coronavirus caseloads back to levels Americans believed they would never see again, Missouri senator Josh Hawley introduced an amendment to the Senate budget resolution addressing what he sensed to be one of his party’s most urgent priorities.

2/. Virtue signalling......

3/. Good short essay - "Vaccine Refusers are Testing My Love Of The South".....well written....

AUBURN, Ala. — When I had just moved here — six years ago and a lifetime ago — I was shopping at Publix, wheeling my cart out to the car. My baby sat in the buggy. I hit a bump, and the bottle of sparkling water I’d just bought skittered onto the ground, exploding. A young man in a Publix uniform ran up; I anticipated frustration (I’d made quite a mess), but instead he apologized for my mistake and ran inside to get another bottle to replace it.

4/. Bill Maher defends Matt Damon from the "woke" police.....a good "New Rules", seven minutes...

5/. What we are all thinking.....we've run out of sympathy for the unvaccinated....
From a Doctor in a Covid Unit....

My patient sat at the edge of his bed gasping for air while he tried to tell me his story, pausing to catch his breath after each word. The plastic tubes delivering oxygen through his nose hardly seemed adequate to stop his chest from heaving. He looked exhausted.

He had tested positive for the coronavirus 10 days ago. He was under 50, mildly hypertensive but otherwise in good health. Eight days earlier he started coughing and having severe fatigue. His doctor started him on antibiotics. It did not work.

Fearing his symptoms were worsening, he started taking some hydroxychloroquine he had found on the internet. It did not work.https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2021-08-17/vaccinated-covid-doctor-shot?_amp=true&__twitter_impression=true&fbclid=IwAR3WP7L9EhZ8jLfY57_AanyDN6CXk0oQdqb887I9dxNV4Er4Gzr5Ksf0FTU

6/. Tom Tomorrow with an unusually truthful toon.....

7/. Excellent story from the Tampa Bay Times.....an expert [remember those] tells us about the Delta variant...
I am in a unique position to report on what is going on with COVID-19, particularly the delta variant and
why it’s so dangerous, and how it interacts with the vaccines.

8/. Another environmental disaster we don't know about - superweeds, caused by the chemicals
Big Ag has been using for many years. Now it's caught up with them....
It was already too late for Darren Nicolet to reverse course last June when he heard that the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals had overturned E.P.A. approval of three products containing dicamba, a controversial but widely used weed killer. A farmer in Kansas, Nicolet had planned his season around the herbicide, planting his fields with soybeans that were genetically modified to survive being showered with the chemical.

9/. Umair on how our climate disasters are just beginning....
As we so often do, I came back recently to the States for the summer from Europe. Back to the East Coast. And it’s hot. I don’t mean the normal August heat I remember. It’s freakishly hot. Sweltering. The air is practically combusting. It’s as hot on the East Coast of the States now as it used to be in the Indian subcontinent when I grew up. That’s serious heat. So how hot is it now in Asia? It’s approaching unlivably hot.

https://eand.co/this-is-just-the-beginning-of-the-climate-apocalypse-db33a473fd91

10/. Bill Maher had Steve Martin and Martin Short on to plug their new show, which sounds pretty funny.....
The interview is nothing extra special, just three older comedians chatting with some decent zingers....five minutes...

11/. Matt Taibbi spells out the real corruption of Afghanistan.....ours, the Blackwaters, the Lockheed Martin's etc....

On MSNBC the other night, Rachel Maddow told a story about visiting Afghanistan a decade ago. She described being taken on a tour of a new neighborhood in Kabul of “narco-palaces,” what she called, “big garish, gigantic, rococo, strange-looking places” that hadn’t existed before the Americans arrived. This was said to be symbolic of the “fantastically corrupt elites” among the Afghan political class who put themselves into position to siphon off big chunks of the “billions of dollars per month” we sent into the country.

12/. And on the theme of corruption, how the wealthy cheat us all.....tax loopholes....
In the months after President Donald Trump signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in December 2017, some tax professionals grew giddy as they discovered opportunities for their clients inside a law that already slashed rates for corporations and wealthy individuals.

13/. I never "got into" this Olympics, but this report from John Stanley [editor of the premier archery magazine in the world] is informative and fascinating, not just about the archery competition but what the Olympics in Covid Japan was really like from both a spectator and reporters POV.
John is a talented writer, and this is excellent reading....

It’s Thursday 29th July, 2021. An San of Korea had already won two gold medals in mixed team and women’s team. She’s paraded through the mixed zone, the labyrinth of rails that athletes must enter to speak to the media after their matches. (The rules for athletes are, you have to go in there, but you don’t have to say anything.) One of the journalists asks her a question, and is instantly cut off by An San’s coach, Park Chaesoon. You know the guy.                       http://www.theinfinitecurve.com/archery/tokyo-2020/

14/. The best Stephen King movies rated, and I have seen a few of them......interestingly The Shining is not #1, and they don't mention The Stand either....oh well...

15/. Good article, with a summary of each show....Amazon Prime TV....

It's officially summer time and while the weather may be getting nicer outside, nothing beats staying inside, curling up on the couch, and binge-watching TV. We said what we said!

But how do you know what TV show is worth your precious binge time? Have no fear, we're here to help. EW has combed all the streaming services for the best shows available on each one to help you narrow down the search for your next binge, and below is a list of the best shows currently streaming on Amazon Prime Videohttps://ew.com/tv/best-shows-amazon-prime/?&did=663562-20210815&utm_campaign=ewk-nonewsubs_relationship-builder&utm_source=ew.com&utm_medium=email&utm_content=081521&cid=663562&mid=64596089852

Todays video [and music video too] - Day-O from the movie Beetlejuice.....keep an eye on the shrimp bowls!

Today's psychiatric joke

Therapist - what's the problem?

Wife - he replaces words with animal names just to annoy me.

Husband - I don't do it on porpoise!

Today's terrible Minnesota joke
Ole is a farmer in Minnesota.  He needs a new milk cow and hears about one for sale over in Nordakota.  (That would be North Dakota for you non-Scandahoovians out der).

He drives to Nordakota, finds the farm and looks at the cow.  He reaches under to see if she gives milk. When he grabs the tit and pulls...the cow farts.

Ole is surprised.  He looks at the farmer selling the cow, then reaches under the cow to try again.  He grabs another tit, pulls, and the cow farts again.

Milk does come out however, so after some discussion, Ole buys the cow and takes her home.

He gets back to Minnesota, he calls over his neighbor Sven, and says, 'Sven, come look at dis ere new cow I yust bought.  Pull her tit, and see vat happens.'

Sven reaches under, pulls the tits - and the cow farts.

Sven looks at Ole, 'You bought dis here cow in Nordakota, didn't yah?'

Ole is surprised since he hadn't told Sven about his trip.

Ole replies, 'Yah, dats right. But how'd yah know?'

Sven says, 'My wife's from Nordakota.'

Today's Star Wars joke

Therapist - so why do you want to end your marriage?

Wife - I hate the constant Star Wars puns.

Husband - Divorce is strong with this one.....

Today's old Trump joke
Donald Trump goes on a fact-finding visit to Israel. While he is on a tour of Jerusalem he suffers a heart attack and dies.
The undertaker tells the American diplomats accompanying him, 'You can have him shipped home for $50,000, or you can bury him here, in the Holy Land, for just  $100.'

The American diplomats go into a corner to discuss for a few minutes. They return with their answer to the undertaker and tell him they want Donald Trump shipped home.

The undertaker is puzzled and asks, 'Why would you spend $50,000 to ship him home, when it would be wonderful to be buried here and you would spend only $100?’

The American diplomats reply, 'Long ago a man died here, was buried here, and three days later he rose from the dead.  We just can't take the risk.'

Today's beer joke
Woman:
Do you drink beer?
Man: Yes

Woman:
How many beers a day?

Man:
Usually about 3

Woman:
How much do you pay per beer?

Man: $5.00 which includes a tip

Woman:
And how long have you been drinking?

Man:
About 20 years, I suppose

Woman:
So a beer costs $5.00 and You have 3 beers a day which puts your spending each month at $450.00. In one year, it would be approximately $5400.00 correct?

Man:
Correct

Woman:
If in 1 year you spend $5400.00, not accounting for inflation, the past 20 years puts your spending at $108,000.00 correct?

Man:
Correct

Woman:
Do you know that if you didn't drink so much beer, that money could have been put in a step-up interest savings account and after accounting for compound interest for the past 20 years, you could have now bought a Ferrari?

Man:
Do you drink beer?

Woman:
No.

Man:
Where's your Ferrari?

Today"s golf jokes

GOLF AND WHAT IT ALL MEANS

Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle, followed by a good bottle of beer..

Golf ! You hit down to make the ball go up.You swing left and the ball goes right. The lowest score wins, on top of that, the winner buys the drinks.

If you find you do not mind playing Golf in the rain, the snow, even during a hurricane, here's a valuable tip ......... Your life is in trouble.

Golfers who try to make everything perfect before taking the shot rarely make a perfect shot.

A 'gimme' can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers ... Neither of whom can putt very well.

An interesting thing about Golf is that no matter how badly you play, it is always possible to get worse.

Golf's a hard game to figure. One day you'll go out and slice it and shank it, hit into all the traps and miss every green. The next day you go out and for no reason at all your game really stinks!

If your best shots are the practice swing and the 'gimme putt', you might wish to reconsider this game.

Golf is the only sport where the most feared opponent is you.

Golf is like marriage, If you take yourself too seriously it won't work, and both are expensive.

The best wood in most amateurs' bags is the pencil.

#05... Three times a day is possible.
#04... Your partner doesn't hire a lawyer if you play with someone else.
#03... If you live in Florida, you can do it almost every day.
#02... You don't have to cuddle with your partner when you're finished.
And the NUMBER ONE reason why golf is better than sex.....
#01... When your equipment gets old you can replace it!
