On Saturday, billionaire financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was arrested for the alleged sex trafficking of dozens of minors in New York and Florida between 2002 and 2005. In a criminal indictment unsealed Monday, federal prosecutors claimed that Epstein lured underage girls, some as young as 14, to his luxurious homes in Manhattan and Palm Beach under the guise of paying them cash for massages. He then molested them and encouraged them to recruit other young girls to return with them. The victims who returned with new victims were paid a finder’s fee.

3/. David Wallace-Wells with a summary of his new book "The Uninhabitable Earth".....
I bought the book, have read it and it makes me thankful I am the age I am, because our lives are going to change much sooner than we think. The real tragedy of all this is that we can mitigate the damage if all the big polluting countries act now, but there is no chance of that with the way our dialogue has been twisted by the fossil fuel industry.
Read this article....but most of you won't, see #5 to find out why....
It is, I promise, worse than you think. If your anxiety about global warming is dominated by fears of sea-level rise, you are barely scratching the surface of what terrors are possible, even within the lifetime of a teenager today. And yet the swelling seas — and the cities they will drown — have so dominated the picture of global warming, and so overwhelmed our capacity for climate panic, that they have occluded our perception of other threats, many much closer at hand.

real, but it's not going to affect me....
Great article from New York Magazine that gives some insight into "climate nimbyism"!

Last month, the planet had its first climate-change election — and then, the following week, it had what was probably its second.
In Australia, the center-right, climate-skeptic Prime Minister Scott Morrison won a surprise reelection by making global warming (and the cost of doing anything about it) the central issue of the campaign. The result was invariably described as a shock, not because the preelection polling margin was so wide (it was only about two points) but because perceptions of climate momentum had seemed to make center-left victory look something like an inevitability, even in the aftermath of France’s gilets jaunes and the ballot-box failure of carbon pricing even in states as green as Washington in the blue-wave election of 2018.

7/ Good story from the Guardian about the coming food crisis....what food crisis you ask? Read on.....
In her meticulously researched 352-page book, Little explores what it will take to continue feeding 7.5 billion people in a world where farming practices are becoming dangerously compromised due to the effects of a climate crisis – catastrophic droughts, record-breaking heatwaves, and wildly swinging weather systems. What began as an 18-month project ballooned into a five-year mission to understand an enormously complex, intricate and surprisingly emotional issue.
I spoke to Little about her book, food systems on the brink of collapse, and what our meals might look like in 2050https://www.theguardian. com/lifeandstyle/2019/jun/30/ climate-crisis-food-global- heating-emergency?CMP=soc_567& fbclid=IwAR0cVolbDCRQ6-36T9_c- PBxHGFhQHRQac298XfposRs3QmZCdX z3JBScdk

9/. Fascinating story about automation and how it is affecting the jobs market....and no matter how much you think you know about how robots
and AI are affecting jobs, you don't know enough. This is similar to climate change....it's happening in plain sight, but no one seems to notice....
Really, really interesting....
There’s a chart I came across in 2017, and not only does it tell an extremely important story about automation, but it also tells a story about the state of the automation discussion itself. It even reveals how we can expect both automation and the discussion around automation to continue unfolding in the years ahead. The chart is a plot of oil rigs in the United States compared to the number of workers the oil industry employs, and it’s an important part of a puzzle that needs to be pieced together before it’s too late.

11/. Republicans defeated a climate bill in Oregon but it was ugly - militias were ready to defend the Senators that walked out.....
The Base won again....
SALEM, ORE. — Massive logging trucks circled the streets around the capitol, flying American flags in their truck beds and blasting horns, as hundreds of right-wing protesters rallied in support of Oregon’s fugitive GOP senators, whose week-long walkout appears to have killed the state’s ambitious cap-and-trade climate legislation.
The rally was a show of force for rural Oregonians. Hundreds of demonstrators, mostly white men, some in hard hats, some wearing camo and hunting orange, many sporting unruly beards, spilled out over the steps in front of the statehouse. The plastic tanks of an irrigation truck parked out front were spray-painted with the words “NO ON HB 2020” — referring to the climate bill. A cluster of III% militiamen gathered in black sweatshirts reading “When Tyranny Becomes Law * Rebellion Becomes Duty.”

15/. Interesting story about how informed women are choosing not to have children.....because of our climate future.....
In 2050 — by which time, according to a June study, the Arctic could be ice free, the Amazon ecosystem may have collapsed and human civilization as we know it will be disintegrating — my children will be just 34 and 36. Maybe a stage in their lives when they’ll have, or be thinking about having, children of their own. Maybe they won’t ever have the luxury of that decision.
As scientists continue to punch out increasingly apocalyptic warnings about the state of the planet, and feelings of “eco-anxiety” rise, it’s perhaps not surprising that some people have started to question whether they want to bring a child into the world.https://www.huffpost. com/entry/children-climate- change-reproduction- conceivable-future- birthstrike_n_ 5d134d63e4b0aa375f564d27

Todays squirrel joke....
The Presbyterian church called a meeting to decide what to do about their squirrel infestation.
After much prayer and consideration, they concluded the squirrels were predestined to be there and they shouldn't interfere with God's divine will.
At the Baptist church the squirrels had taken an interest in the baptistery. The deacons met and decided to put a water-slide on the baptistery and let the squirrels drown themselves. The squirrels liked the slide and, unfortunately, knew instinctively how to swim so twice as many squirrels showed up the following week.
The Lutheran church decided that they were not in a position to harm any of God's creatures. So, they humanely trapped their squirrels and set them free near the Baptist Church. Two weeks later the squirrels were back when the Baptists took down the water-slide.
But the Catholic church came up with a very creative strategy!
They baptized all the squirrels and made them members of the church. Now they only see them at Christmas and Easter.
Not much was heard from the Jewish synagogue; They took the first squirrel and circumcised him. They haven't seen a squirrel since.
