Davids Daily Dose - Sunday August 9th

1/  Frank Rich on Trump's disintegration....
Bubble boy. Photo: Alex Wong/Getty Images

Most weeks, New York Magazine writer-at-large Frank Rich speaks with contributor Alex Carp about the biggest stories in politics and culture. Today, Trump’s disregard for coronavirus victims, Joe Biden’s step out of the spotlight, and the slow cancellation of the political conventions.

Donald Trump’s baffling responses to Jonathan Swan in his Axios interview this week are only part of a recent series of comments that show the president to be disregarding the deaths of tens of thousands of Americans. Are these a failing attempt at salesmanship, or has the White House bubble allowed Trump to live in his own reality?

The baby who occupies the Oval Office is in a corner, flailing, panicking, and babbling.

2/  A bit of a slow start, but this is one of the best Seth Meyers "A Closer Look" pieces for a while.....actually it was named late night clip of the week by New York Magazine.....one of the features is Trump's disastrous Axios interview....a very good 12 minutes....

3/  Tom Tomorrow...always good....
TMW2020-08-05color.png

4/  A long but essential read from Ed Yong in The Atlantic - "How The Pandemic Defeated America"....an intelligent, reasoned look at how we got to the disastrous place we are now in August 2020, and where we are going as a country.....
I recommend this story highly.....it's worth the time.....
He was on this week on MSNBC, and came across very well....
original.jpg
how did it come to this? A virus a thousand times smaller than a dust mote has humbled and humiliated the planet’s most powerful nation. America has failed to protect its people, leaving them with illness and financial ruin. It has lost its status as a global leader. It has careened between inaction and ineptitude. The breadth and magnitude of its errors are difficult, in the moment, to truly fathom.

5/  An ad for Vets against Trump....powerful.....

6/  Matt Taibbi interviews Thomas Frank about his new book.....an intelligent conversation about the history of Populism - looks
like a fascinating read....
https---bucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984.s3.amazonaws.com-public-images-013eca29-f3e5-4cbe-b347-7993894b453c_633x925-3.png
Thomas Frank is one of America’s more skillful writers, an expert practitioner of a genre one might call historical journalism – ironic, because no recent media figure has been more negatively affected by historical change. Frank became a star during a time of intense curiosity about the reasons behind our worsening culture war, and now publishes a terrific book, The People, No: A Brief History of Anti-Populism, at a time when people are mostly done thinking about what divides us, gearing up to fight instead.

7/  The Daily Show with a montage of Fox News hosts mocking Biden's (?) ability to speak properly.....an amusing minute....

8/  A nice story for a change - a music teacher wrote a song to get her through
the pandemic.....very inspirational....one minute....

9/  I posted this a month ago but not much has changed, actually things are worse now. A summary of where we are with the virus, and what's going to happen from a prominent epidemiologist....not a happy future folks....
masks-pandemic-e1591722903613.jpg
We’ve been told alternatively to not wear masks, to wear masks, to stay home, and to get out and reinvigorate the economy. Hydroxychloroquine and remdesivir both got our hopes up but now have largely fizzled. We’ve heard estimates that as many as two million Americans will die and now, with 100,000 deaths, we’ve heard we’re near the end of the crisis. Is a vaccination forthcoming?  How likely are we to get the disease? What exactly should we do with our aging parents who are at the most risk?

10/  Nike's new ad is incredibly beautiful and powerful.....technically marvelous with a great message....

11/  A comedic reporting toon....
1499ckCOMICdeathbydonald.png

12/  The Lincoln Project with "Moms"....about the courage and conviction of women in Portland and all across America.....excellent....

13/  Evangelicals - here is one of your heroes and huge Trump supporter Jerry Falwell Jr.
on a billionaire's yacht with.....his wife?
Update - since this photo was posted four days ago Falwell is now on "leave of absence" from Liberty University...
and the babe is his wife's personal assistant - or was anyway...
EehKU4RWoAApJki.jpeg

14/  The Lincoln Project about Jared...."Secretary Of Failure"....

15/  Remember the parrot sketch with Monty Python? It's been redone, with Trump as the shop owner....
an amusing minute...

16/  After reading this article in Bill Moyers blog I subscribed to Heather Cox Richardson's daily letters  on FB and it's like
getting an intelligent summary of the day's events....I find it really enlightening....
service-pnp-ppmsca-34600-34697v-1024x606.jpg
Welcome to Moyers on Democracy. In this first of two episodes, Bill talks with historian Heather Cox Richardson about her decision last fall to start writing small essays on the history behind today’s politics and posting them on her Facebook page as LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN. She had no idea of the response she might get. But bingo! Today over half a million readers, and counting, wait for her daily dispatches. Her six history books had earned this Boston College professor quite a reputation, and now her classroom spans the Internet. Here’s Bill Moyers to talk about LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN – with the American herself.

17/  No politics, just some weird humour!

18/  Some of the tech platforms [Google, Verizon, Hulu] are refusing to run this ad, aimed at younger blacks....i.e. this
ad has been censored. See what you think....

19/  Definitely no social distancing here....

20/  Here is a story that made me think the politically incorrect movement is waaaaay out of control....Trader Joes is the subject of a petition to change some of their labels which are "racially insensitive"...such as Trader Jose's beer. Note this petition was started by a 17 year old. Why isn't she thinking about the climate, policing, economic injustice, crippling student loans etc. instead of this BS....
19xp-trader-joes-pix-jumbo.jpg
Weeks after admitting that some of its international-themed product labels might have fallen short of an “attempt at inclusiveness,” the grocery store chain Trader Joe’s is rejecting criticism of the labels — some with names like Trader José and Trader Ming’s — as racist.

2/ Sarah Cooper with "How To Obamagate"....one minute....

22/  Did you know Bangladesh is 25% flooded, and millions are starving and have lost everything?
Thought not.....
merlin_174670302_d722e08d-7dcb-4371-965a-6453e3508c4f-superJumbo.jpg

Torrential rains have submerged at least a quarter of Bangladesh, washing away the few things that count as assets for some of the world’s poorest people — their goats and chickens, houses of mud and tin, sacks of rice stored for the lean season.

It is the latest calamity to strike the delta nation of 165 million people

23/  Interesting analysis on how the Republican Party establishment are positioning themselves like rats on a sinking ship [excellent analogy] to bail from Trump.....also some speculation what would have happened if Hillary was elected, which you would not want to hear...

The marriage between Donald Trump and the Republican Establishment was born of convenience not love. The buttoned-up, Burke-quoting worshippers of Mammon (and/or white patriarchal Jesus) who occupy the commanding heights of American conservatism didn’t get into bed with a gauche, grimy Clinton donor until they saw no better way to move up in the world.

24/  This will be familiar to Floridians....despite 63% of voters wanting ex-felons to vote once their time was served the Republicans have gutted the amendment so they can keep the million or so potential voters off the rolls...
This is just blatant....Republicans just don't care any more about what we think....
2655.jpg
On election night in 2018, Meade and Wright would find out that 64.5% of Floridians had voted in favor of a constitutional amendment to end the policy. More than 5.1 million people – more than voted for Ron DeSantis, the Republican elected governor that evening – were in favor of the measure. The referendum – often referred to as amendment 4 – was one of the most dramatic expansions of the right to vote in US history since the landmark 1965 Voting Rights Act.

25/  A new documentary on HBO about Washington and lobbying "The Swamp" looks really interesting, except for the fact one of their Congressman they follow is Matt Gaetz, who is "Florida Man" personified. Oh well, we'll give it a go....
1800.jpg

T

here’s a recurring graphic in The Swamp, a new HBO documentary riffing on the Trump campaign’s (false) promise to drain Washington of moneyed interests, in which vines overrun the Rotunda as it sinks into a gooey morass. The lure of corruption, and the entrenchment of money, is all-encompassing – a rare shared point between America’s two political parties, and a thesis of a film attempting to pull back the curtain on business as usual in Washington.

26/  Time picks the five best TV shows of July.....a couple look really good....

N

ow that we’re deep into the dog days of summer, nearly five months into a quarantine that could go on for much longer and, following the launch of Peacock a few weeks ago, swimming in more streaming content than ever, platforms are getting creative about how they fill their schedules. In many cases, that means licensing shows from abroad—and especially from Anglophone countries like the UK, Canada and Australia. That can be a great thing; in fact, three of July 2020’s best new series come from outside the U.S.

27/  Can't wait for this one...."Lovecraft Country" on HBO....
Courtney-B.-Vance-Jonathan-Majors-Jurnee-Smollett.-Photographer-Eli-Joshua-Ade-HBOc.jpg
Atticus “Tic” Freeman, the young Korean War veteran hero of HBO’s fantastic — in every sense of the word — new drama Lovecraft Country, has a weakness for pulp stories. As he puts it, “I love that the heroes get to go on adventures in other worlds, defy insurmountable odds, defeat the monster, save the day.” But he’s also painfully aware that these tales rarely have room for someone who looks like him.

Today's medical joke....
My urologist called today and explained that my scheduled
appointment would now be done over the phone due to thecoronavirus.
One hour before the scheduled teleconference I was
instructed (via e-mail) to administer my own urine test. This
was to avoid those lab tests and costly co-pays that your doctors
tell you to get at Quest diagnostics, and because they are shut
down too.

Simply go outside and pee in the back yard:

If ants gather: DIABETES

If you pee on your feet: PROSTATE

If it smells like a BBQ: CHOLESTEROL

If you can't pee: DEHYDRATION

If your wrist hurts when you shake it: OSTEOARTHRITIS

If you go back inside with your pecker still outside your pants: ALZHEIMERS
