Davids Daily Dose - Thursday November 18th

1/. Elon Musk is a strange duck with waaaaaaay too much power....and money....
It feels like some kind of divine punishment that the richest man on the planet is also its most immature. Elon Musk — an oligarch responsible for overseeing several major companies and, perhaps most troubling, the lives of his seven children — has the emotional capacity of an 8-year-old boy attempting his first prank phone call.

2/. Taylor Swift's short film about young love and much more....about 11 minutes, and it's powerful and moving.....really good.....

3/. David Wallace-Wells was at the climate conference, and explains what happened there [nada] and
why we [humans and the planet] are so screwed....
It’s now 12 days down for COP26, the climate conference in Glasgow long called “make or break” for humanity, with one more to go. If “make or break” sounds hyperbolic, rhetoric at the conference itself has set the bar just as high — which is to say, perhaps, impossibly high.

4./. Tom Tomorrow.....he's outraged!

5/. Wow - Matt Taibbi with an eye opening commentary on the state of the nation, autumn 2021....this really rings true....

The Mayhem Watch is on. Closing arguments in the trial of “Kenosha Shooter” Kyle Rittenhouse are expected Monday, and after weeks of hype, the country is primed to explode again. Wisconsin governor Tony Evers announced 500 National Guard troops will be on hand for potential post-verdict “unrest,” which seems almost guaranteed, no matter the result.

6/. These are some fine TV choices.....not....

7/. Andrew Sullivan on the mainstream media [MSM], and the "approved" story lines we
are expected to believe.....very insightful....

The news is a perilous business. It’s perilous because the first draft of history is almost always somewhat wrong, and needs a second draft, and a third, and so on, over time, until the historian can investigate with more perspective and calm. The job of journalists is to do as best they can, day by day, and respond swiftly when they screw up, correct the record, and move forward. I’ve learned this the hard way, not least in the combination of credulousness and trauma I harbored in the wake of 9/11.

But when the sources of news keep getting things wrong, and all the errors lie in the exact same direction, and they are reluctant to acknowledge error, we have a problem.

8/. I wish I could find this amusing.....

9/. On and on and on.....another Covid wave is coming for the un-boostered.
And what about next year? A scary one from Umair....

We’re now two years into a global pandemic. And Europe’s going into lockdown again. Meanwhile in America and Britain, cases have never really fallen — just plateaued at a consistently high level. Is it going to be another brutal, bleak Covid winter?

I have good news, and I have bad news.

See that chart above? It’s the most important bit of research into Covid and vaccines so far, period. Everyone should know it, but few do. Everyone should understand what it means so let me explain it.

10/. Really interesting story on how people across the country are building disaster-proof houses....

When a massive wildfire swept through Paradise, Calif., three years ago this week, it killed 85 people and destroyed more than 13,000 homes. The wood chalet-style cabin where Mike and Jennifer Petersen lived — built by Ms. Petersen’s grandparents in the 1960s — was one of those homes.

11/. Sarah Sherman roasts Colin Jost on Weekend Update.....starts a little slow, but give this a chance....she's funny!

12/. Heard about the devastating floods in British Columbia? Of course you haven't....
1079.jpg.webp

A huge storm dumped record rainfall across swathes of British Columbia in Canada and Washington State in the US between Saturday and Monday.

Thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes, others became trapped on cut-off roads, and several towns were completely cut off. Mud and landslides have destroyed parts of major highways. British Columbia’s premier issued a state of emergency on Wednesday and troops have been deployed to help those still stranded.

13/. SNL and Pete Davidson with a brutally funny skit....four minutes....and Taylor Swift comes in at the end.....

14/. Remember Trump's disastrous Tulsa comeback rally? It was much more of a train wreck than we thought......good reporting from Vanity Fair...

On April 24, 2020, Donald Trump received a grim message on a conference call with his campaign advisers. Campaign manager Brad Parscale walked the president through polls conducted by his pollster. The results were dreadful

15/. Samantha Bee wishes you a Happy Thanksgiving....with some advice on vaccinations.....plus the latest anti-vax lunacy.....amusing, 6 minutes....

16/. Looks interesting....Cowboy Bebop on Netflix....

Today's moral dilemma joke....

A moral dilemma for our times…

At the end, this test only has one question, but it's avery important one. By giving an honest answer, you will discover where you stand morally. This test features an unlikely, completely fictional situation in which you will have to make a difficult decision.

Only you will know the results, so remember that your answer needs to be honest.

THE SITUATION:

You are in Florida, Miami to be specific.

There is chaos all around you caused by a hurricane with severe flooding.

This is a flood of biblical proportions.

You are a photojournalist working for a major newspaper, and you're caught in the middle of this epic disaster. The situation is nearly hopeless.

You're trying to shoot career-making photos.

There are houses and people swirling around you, some disappearing under the water.

THE TEST:

Suddenly you see a man in the water.

He is fighting for his life, trying not to be taken down with the debris.

You move closer.

Somehow the man looks familiar.

You suddenly realize who it is.

It's Donald Trump!

At the same time you notice that the raging waters are about to take him under forever.

YOU HAVE TWO OPTIONS:

You can save the life of Donald Trump or you can shoot a dramatic Pulitzer Prize winning photo, documenting the death of one of the world's most powerful Republican men hell bent on the destruction of America.

THE QUESTION:

Here's the question, and please give an honest answer.

"Would you select high contrast color film, or would you go with the classic simplicity of black and white?"

Today's French joke.....

ATT00001.jpg

This actually happened to an Englishman

in France who was totally drunk.

A French policeman stops the Englishman's car and asks if he has been drinking.

With great difficulty, the Englishman admits that he has been drinking all day, that his daughter got married that morning, and that he drank champagne and a few bottles of wine at the reception, and many single malts scotches thereafter.

Quite upset, the policeman proceeds to alcohol-test (breath test) the Englishman and verifies that he is indeed totally sloshed.

He asks the Englishman if he knows why, under French Law, he is going to be arrested.

The Englishman answers with a bit of humor,

"No sir, I do not! But while we're asking questions, do you realize that this is a British car and that my wife is driving on the other side?"

Today's little girl joke....

Here's a truly heartwarming story about the bond formed between a little 5-year-old girl and some construction workers that will make you believe that we all can make a difference when we give a child the gift of our time.

A young family moved into a house, next to a vacant lot. One day, a construction crew began to build a house on the empty lot. The family's 5-year-old daughter naturally took an interest in the goings-on and spent much of each day observing the workers.

Eventually the construction crew, all of them 'gems-in-the-rough,' more or less, adopted her as a kind of project mascot. They chatted with her during coffee and lunch breaks and gave her little jobs to do here and there to make her feel important. At the end of the first week, they even presented her with a pay envelope containing ten dollars. The little girl took this home to her mother who suggested that she take her ten dollars 'pay' she'd received to the bank the next day to start a savings account.

When the girl and her mom got to the bank, the teller was equally impressed and asked the little girl how she had come by her very own pay check at such a young age.

The little girl proudly replied, "I worked last week with a real construction crew building the new house next door to us."

"Oh my goodness gracious," said the teller, "and will you be working on the house again this week, too?"

The little girl replied, "I will, if those assholes at Home Depot ever deliver the fuckin' sheet rock."

Kind of brings a tear to the eye - doesn't it?
