Davids Daily Dose - Wednesday March 12

1/. This is a must read.....Bob Lefsetz feels something coming.....

This is UnitedHealthcare.

This is what happens when the Democratic leadership is somnambulant, people take matters into their own hands.

I don’t know if this news has made it into the right wing blogosphere. But in the mainstream press this week there have been all these stories about Tesla sales tanking. Significantly.

And now people are attacking Tesla cars and dealerships and…

We can’t say exactly how many people are responsible, but one thing is for sure, they’re tapping into an anger that permeates the left, if not some of the right too.

2/. And this is a must read too.....a follow on from #1.....

How much money did you lose today?

Now if you’re a young ‘un, who believes they’ll be healthy until the day they die, working all the while, there’s no need to prepare for the future. But if you’re a boomer, living on a fixed income.

You had to own stocks just to keep up with inflation.

So…

That’s the story of the day, how the market crashed. In the wake of Trump hinting at a recession. And in today’s print edition, the “Wall Street Journal” had an article whose headline says it all:

“Are Stocks a Sure Thing Over the Long Term? Not Necessarily – While it doesn’t occur frequently, U.S. stocks, as well as international markets, have produced losses over 10- and 20-year periods, research shows”

Are you anxious yet?

3/. This is a short TikTok all Democrats need to watch.......

4/. Andrew Sullivan with a masterly summary of Trump's speech to Congress, and where we are now......
Keep your spirits up, avoid social media and seek the truth.....

“Dennis Burnham, who lived next door, was a toddler when his mother briefly put him in a playpen in their garden. She returned a few minutes later to find the current U.S. president, then aged five or six, standing at his fence throwing rocks at the little boy. Another neighbor, Steven Nachtigall, now a 66-year-old doctor, said he never forgot Trump ... once jumping off his bike and beating up another boy: ‘It was so unusual and terrifying at that age,’” - Trump Revealed.

“When I look at myself in the first grade and I look at myself now, I’m basically the same,” - Donald J Trump.

The pews at the cathedral were packed this Ash Wednesday — more than I can remember in years. Some others on social media seemed to notice the same thing. And the atmosphere was dark and intense even for the beginning of Lent — as ash was smeared on my forehead with the familiar, sobering mantra:

Remember, man, that thou are dust and unto dust thou shalt return.

5/. The tech bros will find a way to do this.....just like in "1984".....

6/. How Democrats have basically given up resisting Trump.....

few weeks into Donald Trump’s second term, a MAGA-supporting acquaintance asked me why the left seemed “so unbelievably demoralized.” He was not (merely) gloating; he was curious. “I’m sure it won’t last,” he told me, “but for now it’s just sort of a bewildering sensation to feel like you’re doing politics with no opposition.” There was a note of pity in his voice.

He wasn’t wrong. The first signs of life from the dazed Democrats following the inauguration were not exactly encouraging: Joining a protest outside the Treasury on February 4, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer held hands with California representative Maxine Waters — an icon of the resistance to Trump’s first term — and chanted “We will win!” several times before seeming to realize the implausibility of his boast. Interrupting himself, he leaned into the mic and rephrased: “We won’t rest! We won’t rest!”

Shortly after, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries waved the white flag.

7/. More on the Democrats pathetic response to Trump's speech......

Happy International Women’s Day (IWD), everyone! I’ve got some good news and some bad news to mark the occasion.

The bad news is that a legally defined sexual predator is leading the most powerful country on earth and we’re seeing a global backlash against women’s rights. “[I]nstead of mainstreaming equal rights, we are seeing the mainstreaming of misogyny,” the UN secretary-general, António Guterres, said in his IWD message.

The good news, for those of us in the US at least, is that the Democrats have a plan to deal with all this. Or rather, they have wardrobe concepts of a plan. On Tuesday night, Donald Trump addressed a joint session of Congress at the US Capitol. Some members from the Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC), including Nancy Pelosi, decided to protest by … wait for it … wearing pink.

8/. Molson Beer [Canada] has come out with a new ad! Wow....

9/. Interesting.....we have been told forever that buying a home is creating equity
and capital.....not any more....

It’s good to hold on to your dreams, but for now, it may be time to pivot from the one about the house: Homeowners spend an average 37% more overall than renting.

According to a Bankrate study published in 2024, “It’s cheaper to rent than to buy in all of the top 50 metros. The typical monthly mortgage payment of a median-priced home ($412,778, per Redfin) in the U.S. is $2,703, while the national typical monthly rent is $1,979 as of February — a 36.6% difference.”

Personal finance expert and TV host Ramit “I will teach you to be rich” Sethi, has been famously railing against wasting money on homeownership and takes it on in his new book, Money for Couples.

10/. The mask slips occasionally.....

11/. Bob Lefsetz likens the music business to the predicament the Democrats are in.....

You’ve got to be willing to question the system.

That was what Napster was about. That powered all the change at the turn of the century until a little over a decade ago when the tech companies solidified their power.

This is why Trump won and is winning. He questioned orthodoxy.

Meanwhile, the Democrats have put their faith in the system to save them, I wouldn’t be so sure.

12/. Trump has the MSM totally flummoxed.

13/. Polycrisis - this is a term that describes global environmental and political changes as cascading events,
each disaster feeding the others.....
The article has no suggestions, but describes and defines the term polycrisis......

Two months into 2025, the sense of dread is palpable. In the US, the year began with a terrorist attack; then came the fires that ravaged a city, destroying lives, homes and livelihoods. An extremist billionaire came to power and began proudly dismantling the government with a chainsaw. Once-in-a-century disasters are happening more like once a month, all amid devastating wars and on the heels of a pandemic.

The word “unprecedented” has become ironically routine. It feels like we’re stuck in a relentless cycle of calamity, with no time to recover from one before the next begins.

14/. An ironic toon......

15/. An in-depth story from the Guardian on how Asheville has mainly recovered from Helene, but is now more vulnerable to other climate disasters that are almost certainly coming.....and all of the forests in WNC now have massive amounts of fallen trees, fuel for fires to come.
Just a side note - The Guardian is the only major English language newspaper not owned by a billionaire.

The city of Asheville and its surrounding areas have been left vulnerable to floods, fires and extreme heat after Hurricane Heleneuprooted thousands of trees that provided shade and protection from storms.

Helene was catastrophic for the region’s trees – in part due to the heavy precursor rainstorm that pounded southern Appalachia for two days straight, drenching the soil before Helene hit, bringing yet more heavy rain and 60-100mph winds.

The category 4 storm caused severe damage to more than 400,000 acres of forest in rural areas of western North Carolina alone, stripping entire mountainsides bare, according to the latest assessment by the US Forest Service. Almost half the forest in Mitchell county was severely damaged, as was about 30% in Ashe and Watauga and 17% in Buncombe county.

16/. Another amazing AI video of a possible future......

17/. The Times picks the 50 best movies on Netflix.....
The sheer volume of films on Netflix — and the site’s less than ideal interface — can make finding a genuinely great movie there a difficult task. To help, we’ve plucked out the 50 best films currently streaming on the service in the United States, updated regularly as titles come and go. And as a bonus, we link to more great movies on Netflix within many of our write-ups below. (Note: Streaming services sometimes remove titles or change starting dates without giving notice.)

18/. "When No One Sees Us".....the Times really likes this show....on Max....

The Spanish series “When No One Sees Us,” beginning Friday on Max, is one of the better foreign-crime dramas in ages — focused, beautiful, sturdy but artful. The show is set in a small town in Spain where there is a U.S. Air Force base, and the story unfolds during Holy Week, which adds to the sense of import and impending crisis.

“No One” (in Spanish and English, with subtitles) is the tale of two cops and two investigations, one local and one foreign. Lucía (Maribel Verdú) is the Spanish cop with a testy teenage daughter, a deteriorating mother-in-law and a phone that never stops ringing. She’s looking into a startling ritualistic suicide and an emerging drug ring. Adding to her to-do list is Magaly (Mariela Garriga), a high-ranking investigator for the U.S. military, brought in to find a missing airman who might be part of an intelligence breach.

Today's Trump joke
Donald Trump was visiting a primary school in Orlando and visited a 4th grade class.
They were in the middle of a discussion related to words and their meanings.
The teacher asked Mr.Trump if he would like to lead the discussion on the word 'tragedy.'
So our illustrious POTUS asked the class for an example of a 'tragedy'.
One little boy stood up and offered: "If my best friend, who lives on a farm, is playing in the field and a tractor runs him over and kills him, that would be a tragedy."
"No," said Trump, "that would be an accident."
A little girl raised her hand: "If a school bus carrying 50 children drove off a cliff, killing everyone, that
would be a tragedy."
"I'm afraid not," explained Trump. "That's what we would call a great loss."
The room went silent. No other child volunteered. Trump searched the room.
"Isn't there someone here who can give me an example of a tragedy?"
Finally at the back of the room, Little Johnny raised his hand.
The teacher held her breath.
In a quiet voice he said: "If the plane carrying you was struck by a 'friendly fire' missile and blown to smithereens that would be a tragedy."
"Fantastic!" exclaimed Trump, "That's right. And can you tell me why that would be a tragedy?"
"Well," says Johnny, "It has to be a tragedy, because it sure as hell wouldn't be a great loss... and you can bet your sweet ass it wouldn't be an accident either!"
The teacher left the room.
