Davids Daily Dose - Wednesday June 6th

1/  A look at the billionaires behind Mitt Romney - Rolling Stone lists the mega-wealthy elderly men who have given huge sums to Romney's campaign and the SuperPacs, and what they want in return. Oh yes, there is a payoff if Mitt gets in......

Presidential politics has always been a rich man's game. But now, thanks to the Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United that upended decades of limits on campaign donations, financing a presidential race is the exclusive domain of the kind of megadonor whose portfolios make Mitt Romney look middle-class. "I have lots of money, and can give it legally now," Texas billionaire and top GOP moneyman Harold Simmons recently bragged to The Wall Street Journal. "Just never to Democrats."
In past elections, big donors like Simmons gave millions for advocacy groups like Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. By law, such groups were only allowed to run issue ads – but instead they directly targeted John Kerry, drawing big fines from the Federal Elections Commission. Now, with the blessing of the Supreme Court, the wealthy can legally hand out unlimited sums to groups that openly campaign for a candidate, knowing that their "dark money" donations will be kept entirely secret. The billionaire Koch brothers, for instance, have reportedly pledged $60 million to defeat President Obama this year – but their off-the-book contributions don't appear in any FEC filings.
Even more money from megadonors is flowing into newly created Super PACs, which, unlike advocacy groups, can spend every cent they raise on direct attacks on an opponent. Under the new rules, the richest men in America are plying candidates with donations far beyond what Congress intended. "They can still give the maximum $2,500 directly to the campaign – and then turn around and give $25 million to the Super PAC," says Trevor Potter, general counsel of the Campaign Legal Center. A single patron can now prop up an entire candidacy, as casino magnate Sheldon Adelson did with a $20 million donation to the Super PAC backing Newt Gingrich.
The undisputed master of Super PAC money is Mitt Romney.

2/  Dancing is a universal art form, and this is a compilation of famous dance moves - from ballet to Elvis, from Fred Astaire to the Three Stooges.....excellent......the music track is "All These Things That I've Done" by The Killers.....

Five minutes of nostalgia, amazement and fun........

3/  Continuing the billionaire theme, Joseph Stiglitz wonders why the wealthy don't realise their selfishness threatens the society they live in.....greed is not good even for the greedy.

Let’s start by laying down the baseline premise: inequality in America has been widening for decades. We’re all aware of the fact. Yes, there are some on the right who deny this reality, but serious analysts across the political spectrum take it for granted. I won’t run through all the evidence here, except to say that the gap between the 1 percent and the 99 percent is vast when looked at in terms of annual income, and even vaster when looked at in terms of wealth—that is, in terms of accumulated capital and other assets. Consider the Walton family: the six heirs to the Walmart empire possess a combined wealth of some $90 billion, which is equivalent to the wealth of the entire bottom 30 percent of U.S. society. (Many at the bottom have zero or negative net worth, especially after the housing debacle.) Warren Buffett put the matter correctly when he said, “There’s been class warfare going on for the last 20 years and my class has won.”
So, no: there’s little debate over the basic fact of widening inequality. The debate is over its meaning. From the right, you sometimes hear the argument made that inequality is basically a good thing: as the rich increasingly benefit, so does everyone else. This argument is false: while the rich have been growing richer, most Americans (and not just those at the bottom) have been unable to maintain their standard of living, let alone to keep pace. A typical full-time male worker receives the same income today he did a third of a century ago.
From the left, meanwhile, the widening inequality often elicits an appeal for simple justice: why should so few have so much when so many have so little? It’s not hard to see why, in a market-driven age where justice itself is a commodity to be bought and sold, some would dismiss that argument as the stuff of pious sentiment.
Put sentiment aside. There are good reasons why plutocrats should care about inequality anyway—even if they’re thinking only about themselves. The rich do not exist in a vacuum. They need a functioning society around them to sustain their position.

4/  A Russian amusement ride you wouldn't get me on with a cattle prod....listen to the screaming.....3 minutes.....

5/  An excellent Bill Maher where he looks at the Republican charges of Obama being a "socialist", and then asks the obvious question.....if he is such a raving Marxist, why am I not happy? A wonderful 5 minute clip to end his season, and it displays his knack for getting serious points across while making you laugh out loud.....

Which I did at the Michelle Bachmann reference....
Maher shot down claims that Obama has been racking up the government spending with statistics showing that of every president since Ronald Reagan, Obama has had the smallest annualized growth of federal spending. Or, in Maher’s words, “the black man’s is the shortest.” He pointed to Obama’s concessions and moderate actions on the financial crisis, oil drilling, and other big issues. Once again, Maher asked conservatives exactly what they mean when they claim Obama is the most radical president of all time.
“How can you guys be so unhappy with Obama when I’m so unhappy with Obama? You think you got coal in your stocking? I wanted single-payer health care, a carbon emissions bill, gun control, and legalized pot. If you get to carry around all this outrage over me getting that shit, shouldn’t I have gotten it?”
Maher also made a not-so-subtle Trayvon Martin reference by joking that Obama “could not be less threatening if he was walking home with iced tea and Skittles.”

6/  Tiger's flop shot that won him the Memorial tournament this past weekend.......wow....1 minute.....

7/  More on "What the hell is happening to Canada" environmentally, and the answer is oil - oil and money........which have purchased the Harper government and gutting environmental laws and procedures......

When President Obama postponed and then denied approval of the Keystone XL tar sands oil pipeline, Harper and tar sands oil companies became desperate fearing they can't get enough tar sands oil to market. The oil is landlocked, putting expansion plans at risk. The U.S. and Canada have all the tar sands oil they can consume, so oil companies have to get access to the Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts where the oil can be exported to Asia, Europe and South America. Unfortunately for them, 100 First Nations have blocked the best Pacific route (the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline) and American environmental groups with the help of President Obama have blocked the best route to the Gulf (the Keystone XL pipeline).
The oil industry is getting desperate, and desperation breeds radicalism. Harper and Big Oil are desperate to cash in their wealth before fuel efficiency measures and the inevitable carbon pricing policies kill their market, so they need to disarm their opposition. To do so, Harper's government has threatened the charitable status (and thus the fundraising ability) of environmental groups who oppose tar sands, attacked them as pawns of U.S. interests, subjected them to onerous Revenue Canada reporting requirements to bog them down, and even accused them of "laundering money."

8/  A home made video of a robin's nest and footage of Mama robin sitting on the eggs, the eggs being hatched, the chicks getting fed and eventually flying off and leaving the nest.....amazing video, and actually kind of heartwarming.....3 minutes.....

9/  We love to target Fox News and rail about their blatant manipulation of the "news", but as this article in HuffPo says they are like the honey badger - they couldn't give a shit what you think......

There's an old saying that I'm a big fan of: Never try to teach a pig to sing -- it wastes your time and annoys the pig. I think of this every time I get the urge to lash out at Fox News for some irresponsible, grossly unethical thing or other that the network has done or has had the gall to broadcast under the guise of being a real news organization. My criticism, like everyone else's, won't matter one bit -- the attack will just bounce off of Roger Ailes's prodigious belly like he was Kung-Fu Panda. Not only does Fox News not fret over its many detractors and their grievances, it generally welcomes the outrage as an opportunity to once again let its pit-bullish media relations department off the chain to maul the crap out of the poor bastard with the bad sense to hassle its master. The result is always bloody and the guy who dared to take a swipe at Fox rarely comes out on top.
Ailes learned from one of the most profoundly talented bullies in all of politics so it goes without saying that he's not the kind of guy to respond, "Well, you might have a point there, my good man, but I suppose we'll just have to chalk this up to a difference of opinion," or even better, a simple "no comment," whenever somebody calls his leviathan propaganda machine out for being what it is.

10/  A "gotcha" clip where the NBA rookie of the year is made up as an old man, and then drops in on a local pick-up basketball game in New Jersey.....an amusing 5 minutes......

11/  North Carolina just passed a bill that defies science, and the legislation will not allow any state agency to tell the truth about the coming rise in sea levels.....hmmmm.......just reminds me of the wonderful saying "you may not believe in global warming, but global warming believes in you"....

How stupid can this country get.......
Some North Carolina GOP legislators want to stop the use of science to plan for the future. They are circulating a bill that would force coastal counties to ignore actual observations and the best science-based projections in planning for future sea level rise.
King Canute thought he had the power to hold back the tide (in the apocryphal legend). These all-too-real lawmakers want to go one better and mandate a formula that projects a sea level rise of at most 12 inches this century, far below what the science now projects.
A state-appointed science panel reviewed the recent literature and reported that a 1-meter (39 inch) rise is likely by 2100. Many coastal studies experts think a level of 5 to 7 feet should be used, since you typically plan for the plausible worst-case scenario, especially with expensive, long-lived infrastructure.
The 2011 report by the National Academy of Science for the U.S. Navy on the national security implications of climate change concluded:
Based on recent peer-reviewed scientific literature, the Department of the Navy should expect roughly 0.4 to 2 meters global average sealevel rise by 2100, with a most likely value of about 0.8 meter. Projections of local sea-level rise could be much larger and should be taken into account for naval planning purposes,

12/  Kina Grannis with "In Your Arms", a nice song well sung by the young lady, but look at the stop motion video special effects.......most unusual......

13/  High end real estate is doing very nicely, thank you.......this is an interesting story about Indian Creek in Miami......

IN the world of high-end real estate, it can be tough for other cities to keep up with Manhattan and Beverly Hills, with all the star power and headlines generated by 20-something heiresses paying more than $80 million apiece for trophy homes — a kind of bicoastal battle of blank-check buyers.
But don’t count out South Florida. The high-end market in Miami-Dade County may not have a Petra Ecclestone or Ekaterina Rybolovleva jetting in to spend money from her billionaire father, but its selling environment, once synonymous with bust, is seeing signs of a boom again.
Two weeks ago, a penthouse owned by Alex Birkenstock (from the German shoe company loved by the hippie crowd) sold for $25 million, a record apartment sale, to an Italian who controls an investment company. In recent days, a developer’s 10-bedroom home on the exclusive Indian Creek Island, listed for $52 million, went into contract to a foreign buyer, brokers said. The price was not disclosed.
If that deal closes, it will very likely top the post-bubble record for a residential property sale in Miami-Dade County, currently held by Edward Lampert, a hedge-fund billionaire, who bought a house on Indian Creek in March for $38.4 million, brokers said.
“Everything is kind of selling now,” said Jill Hertzberg, one half of “The Jills,” a broker duo for Coldwell Banker in Miami who are co-listing the 10-bedroom home, at 3 Indian Creek Drive, which features a “7-limo-size” garage.
“You wonder how long it will last,” Ms. Hertzberg said.
The pending sale on Indian Creek — home to Julio Iglesias and Norman Braman, a billionaire art collector and former owner of the Philadelphia Eagles — is the latest in a string of homes and lots that have sold on the island over the last three months. All of the sales have been over $10 million, and most have been by longtime residents acquiring neighboring properties.

14/  They have been advertising the hell out of "Snow White and the Huntsman", but as this review says it looks really good, an intelligent and exciting "Lord-of-the-rings-ish" movie.....

I’m not sure this counts as a spoiler of anything other than Universal’s sleek and seductive marketing campaign — which has properly emphasized crows, swords and Charlize Theron’s hair — but there are actually some dwarfs in the new movie “Snow White and the Huntsman.” The small fellows who befriend the exiled princess here are nothing like the grumpy, sneezy, dopey guys you remember from the Disney version. The actors who play them (including Ian McShane, Eddie Marsan, Ray Winstone and the great Bob Hoskins, all digitally shrunken) might otherwise have been assembled for a nasty little Cockney gangster film. These dwarfs are industrious, but they don’t whistle while they work. Their most memorable song is a haunting dirge performed at the funeral pyre of a fallen comrade. So take note: There is nothing cute about this movie.

And that feels right. There is something exciting about how seriously “Snow White and the Huntsman” takes its themes. Most of the fairy tales that have become fixtures of modern popular culture — including those, like “Snow White,”published by the Brothers Grimm in the early 19th century — emerged from the dark, violent folk landscape of early modern Europe. They are fables of innocence, but also of terror, dense with superstition and sexual anxiety. Walt Disney’s justly beloved 1937 animated feature, though it has some spooky, gothic visual touches, expelled most of the demons and turned the heroine into an emblem of chaste and cheerful domestic normalcy. Since then, Hollywood fairy tales have mainly tacked between wide-eyed romanticism and winking self-consciousness.

Good trailer.......spooky......

Todays video - a classic, Robin Williams on golf.....warning, salty language.....

Todays retiree joke

Four old retired guys are walking down a street in Yuma, Arizona. They turn a corner and see a sign that says, "Old Timers Bar - ALL drinks 10 cents."
They look at each other and then go in, thinking, this is too good to be true.

The old bartender says in a voice that carries across the room, "Come on in and let me pour one for you!!  What'll it be, gentlemen?"

There's a fully stocked bar, so each of the men orders a martini. In no time the bartender serves up four iced martinis-shaken, not stirred, and says, "That'll be 10 cents each, please."

The four guys stare at the bartender for a moment, then at each other. They can't believe their good luck.  They pay the 40 cents, finish their martinis, and order another round.

Again, four excellent martinis are produced, with the bartender again saying, "That's 40 cents, please."  They pay the 40 cents, but their curiosity gets the better of them.  They've each had two martinis and haven't even spent a dollar yet.

Finally one of them says, "How can you afford to serve martinis as good as these for a dime apiece?"

"I'm a retired tailor from Phoenix," the bartender says, "and I always wanted to own a bar. Last year I hit the Lottery jackpot for $125 million and decided to open this place. Every drink costs a dime.
Wine, liquor, beer - it's all the same."

"Wow! That's some story!" one of the men says.

As the four of them sip at their martinis, they can't help noticing seven other people at the end of the bar who don't have any drinks in front of them and haven't ordered anything the whole time they've been there.

Nodding at the seven at the end of the bar, one of the men asks the bartender, "What's with them?"

The bartender says,  "They're retired people from Florida. They're waiting for Happy Hour when drinks are half-price."

Davids Daily Dose - Friday June 1st

1/  Long but fascinating article from New York Magazine about the Obama strategy for the November elections - although they will be outspent 2 to 1 by a combination of Romney and the right wing SuperPacs they are still confident the President will be reelected.....but it will be a squeaker......

Good reading if you are interested in politics......required reading if you're a Democrat......

David Plouffe sits in his White House office, just a few steps from the Oval, staring at an oversize map of these United States. It’s late afternoon on May 9, two hours after Barack Obama’s declaration that his evolution on gay marriage has reached its terminus. The president is down the hall and on the phone, discussing his decision’s theological implications with several prominent African-American pastors—while Plouffe is being queried about its political dimensions by a querulous Caucasian reporter. The map at which Plouffe is gazing isn’t the electoral kind with the states shaded blue and red; as a federal employee, he notes wryly, “I’m not permitted to have one on the wall.” But given the way his head is hardwired, I’m pretty sure Plouffe is seeing those colors regardless.
The question of whether Obama’s new stance narrows or widens his path to victory in November is one that Plouffe and his comrades have been agonizing over since early this year, when their boss returned from vacation and told them he wanted to take the plunge. The possible political benefits are clear: jazzing up young voters, ginning up gay dollars. As are the costs: turning off socially conservative Democrats and independents, particularly in four pivotal swing states—Iowa, Ohio, North Carolina, and Virginia. But as to the net effect of the announcement on Obama’s ability to accumulate 270 electoral votes, his adjutants are unable to render a firm verdict. “I think there is more upside potential than downside potential,” Plouffe says. “But is there a scenario where it’s harder? Yes.”

2/  Lord Barack takes on Sir Romney of the Northlands - surprisingly good parody of the upcoming election, if it was being held in the middle ages with "Game of Thrones"......an amusing 4 minutes.......love the weaselly Santorum character.....

3/  According to a University study watching Fox News makes you stupid.........something we know instinctively has been researched and confirmed......

People who work at Fox News might like to think that they are despised by real journalists only because they are conservative and most journalists are liberal. Anyone who read the admiring obituaries of William F. Buckley Jr. in mainstream and liberal outlets would know that is nonsense. Journalists, both liberals and ones with no ideology in particular, are quite capable of respecting conservative pundits and reporters who deserve their respect.
But Fox does not. The reason is not because it holds a set of values that others may not share. And that is only partially because it claims to be “Fair and Balanced” when it is neither.
Rather, it is because it fails the fundamental test of journalism: are you informing your audience? According to a new study by Farleigh Dickinson University, Fox viewers are the least knowledgeable audience of any outlet, and they know even less about politics and current events than people who watch no news at all.
Respondents to the survey were able to answer correctly an average of 1.8 of 4 questions about international news and 1.6 out of 5 questions about domestic affairs. “Based on these results, people who don’t watch any news at all are expected to answer correctly on average 1.22 of the questions about domestic politics, just by guessing or relying on existing basic knowledge,” said Dan Cassino, the poll’s analyst.
“The study concludes that media sources have a significant impact on the number of questions that people were able to answer correctly,” wrote Cassino and his colleagues. “The largest effect is that of Fox News: all else being equal, someone who watched only Fox News would be expected to answer just 1.04 domestic questions correctly—a figure which is significantly worse than if they had reported watching no media at all. On the other hand, if they listened only to NPR, they would be expected to answer 1.51 questions correctly.”

4/  Not only does it make you stupid, but if you watch Fox News you are watching Republican TV - have a look at the 4 minute video shown on "Fox and Friends"......it's like an attack ad from a SuperPac......

It isn't that they don't have the right to put out this kind of stuff, but the problem is that there is a pretense that it's actual news, "fair and balanced"......it's neither......

"Fox and Friends" aired a remarkable four-minute video on its Wednesday show.
The video, which the hosts of the show advertised as taking a "look back" at President Obama's four years in office, could easily be mistaken for a Republican attack ad. It was aired multiple times throughout the show. (UPDATE: Fox News later issued a statement disavowing the ad and attributing it to an associate producer. See the statement below.)
"We decided to take a look back at the president's first term to see if it lived up to hope and change," host Gretchen Carlson asked at one point, introducing the video.
In the video —which is labeled as a "Fox and Friends Presents" production — viewers see images of Obama talking about jobs contrasted with footage of homeless people. There is dark, foreboding music, and statistics about the unemployment rate, the rise in the number of food stamps, and the national debt, among other things.

5/  Jon Stewart is back from a 2 week break, and rips Roger Ailes [head of Fox News] a new one for calling him a socialist.....excellent 8 minute segment.......

Jon Stewart devoted part of a segment on Tuesday night to, well, himself. He took aim at Fox News head Roger Ailes saying he recalled a conversation they had at a bar, in which Stewart confessed he’s basically a socialist. Well, Stewart said, Ailes had a confession of his own agenda. He then went on to clarify what he really meant.

6/  Economics is always clearly and simply explained by Simon Johnson, and in this article he tells us how the Euro zone is doomed to break up.......the European news is full of this crisis, and the issue is the authorities still believe in austerity by the problem governments, Greece and now Spain....but the voters aren't having it.....

So get ready for eventual chaos......which depends on how long can the euro zone hold together. Johnson's story is a little technical in the middle, but very clear towards the end. He is basically saying the same as Paul Krugman......

This is big deal folks, serious shit......

In every economic crisis there comes a moment of clarity.  In Europe soon, millions of people will wake up to realize that the euro-as-we-know-it is gone.  Economic chaos awaits them.
To understand why, first strip away your illusions.  Europe’s crisis to date is a series of supposedly “decisive” turning points that each turned out to be just another step down a steep hill.  Greece’s upcoming election on June 17 is another such moment.  While the so-called “pro-bailout” forces may prevail in terms of parliamentary seats, some form of new currency will soon flood the streets of Athens.  It is already nearly impossible to save Greek membership in the euro area: depositors flee banks, taxpayers delay tax payments, and companies postpone paying their suppliers – either because they can’t pay or because they expect soon to be able to pay in cheap drachma.
The troika of the European Commission (EC), European Central Bank (ECB), and International Monetary Fund (IMF) has proved unable to restore the prospect of recovery in Greece, and any new lending program would run into the same difficulties.  In apparent frustration, the head of the IMF, Christine Lagarde, remarked last week, “As far as Athens is concerned, I also think about all those people who are trying to escape tax all the time.”

7/  Donald Trump - what a certified asshole he is, now reviving the birther issue......Stephen Colbert gives us a wonderful 4 minute segment on 'the Donald".....

Donald Trump and his birther crusade just won't go away. On tonight's Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert examined the latest in Trump's ridiculousness and explained what it means for Mitt Romney.

8/  The best stories about complex issues are the human ones - here is a painful tale of one man's end of life care, and how it and millions of other examples are bankrupting us all......and causing pain and misery along the way........

The lesson of this story is that if you don't want this to happen to you, you need

1/ a living will, with your wishes clearly stated and

2/ a medical surrogate who will say "NO" to the medical system, which will keep you on the machines till you run out of money unless someone makes the hard decisions......

Why Did Her Husband’s End-of-Life Care Cost So Much?

May 28, 2012 1:00 AM EDT

$33,382 for one hospital stay. $43,711 for the next. And a final $14,022 for the last three days of life. This is the price tag of dying in America.

On Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, my husband, Terence Foley, lay down on the floor of a doctor’s examining room and refused to get up.

For seven years Terence and I had fought against his kidney cancer. The disease was now spreading to other parts of his body. He was exhausted and coughing. So worn out he couldn’t sit upright. He twisted and squirmed trying to make himself comfortable. I bundled his jacket under his head and covered him with my coat.
He was clearly very sick, yet we still weren’t giving up. Our oncologist, Dr. Keith Flaherty, believed that an experimental treatment would gain Terence more life. Meanwhile, he had sent us to this lung specialist, hoping he could attack one of the tumors and make Terence more comfortable while we waited for the new medicine to take effect.
Instead, shaking his head, the doctor we had never met before admitted Terence to an advanced-cancer-care ward at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. And then an entirely new set of doctors took over, and there began the kind of end-of-life drama that unfolds in hospitals across the country every day.
During those four days Terence had his blood drawn—eight times. Urine collected at least twice. There was a CT scan of his chest and an MRI of his brain. A physical therapist dropped by several times. A nutritionist talked about cancer fatigue, decompensation, and calorie needs. Over the stay, at least 29 professionals—nurses, physical therapists, a nutritionist, and nine M.D.s—attended to his needs. We had never met any of them before, and I don’t recall ever meeting the majority of them even then.

9/  Amazing 2 minute video of traffic at a busy intersection in India.....organised chaos......and pedestrians as well......seems to work though.......

10/  One of the surprising things about Canada is how to reconcile the "kindler gentler America" image with the wholesale destruction of the environment that is happening in the Alberta tar sands oil fields......

The explanation is simple - the Canadians elected a right wing government, who immediately proceeded to overrule their scientists and embrace the oil companies and their money.......

This is an open letter from someone on the inside who is speaking up......

Dear Everyone,
My name is Naomi. I am Canadian. I worked for Environment Canada, our federal environmental department, for several years before our current Conservative leadership (under Stephen Harper) began decimating environmentalism in Canada. I, along with thousands and thousands of federal science employees lost any hope of future work. Their attitude towards the environment is ‘screw research that contradicts the economic growth, particularly of the oil sands’. They have openly and officially denigrated anyone that supports the environment and opposes big-money oil profit as ‘radicals’ (http://tinyurl.com/7wwf8dp).
Every day in Canada, new information about their vendetta on science and the environment becomes quietly public and keeps piling up. I have been privy to much first-hand information still because I retain friendships with my ex-colleagues (though my blood pressure hates me for it).
While I was working there, scientists were effectively muzzled from speaking to the media without prior confirmation with Harper’s media team (http://tinyurl.com/7bnsqp4) – usually denied, and when allowed, totally controlled. Scientists were threatened with job loss if they said anything in an interview that was not exactly what the media team had told them to say. This happened in 2008. The public didn’t find out for years.

11/  A video from Australian TV, asking Americans simple questions about the world........a little unfair because anyone with the answers would be edited out, but overall our fellow citizens are pretty ignorant of geography and world affairs.....because they don't teach geography any more in school, and TV news doesn't cover world news unless it's a crisis.......

So maybe this video isn't unfair after all......5 minutes......and quite amusing......

12/  And similar to the Canadian story the truth will out eventually - FCAT is the universally despised student scoring system used in Florida, but this year the scores plummeted.

Why? Read on.......the author tells us how the scoring centers produce corrupt results.....

The scores for the writing portion of this year's FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test) plummeted so precipitously that the abilities of the Sunshine State's student writers aren't being called into question, the very validity of those scoring statistics are. While I don't want to say "I told you so" regarding the dubiousness of those statistics, I did tell you so, as my 2009 book highlighted in great detail all the ways the numbers produced by the for-profit testing industry cannot be trusted.
Especially the stats produced at Pearson scoring centers around the country, where I worked for some 15 years.
On the first project I worked scoring student essays, I had to pass a qualifying exam to stay on the job. When I failed that qualifying exam (twice), I was unceremoniously fired. So were half the original hundred scorers who'd also failed the tests. Of course, when Pearson realized the next morning they no longer had enough scorers to complete the project on time, they simply lowered the "passing" grade on the qualifying test and put us flunkies right back on the job.
Yes, those of us considered unable to score student essays 12 hours before were welcomed back into the scoring center with open arms, deemed "qualified" after all.
Such duplicity was not an aberration in my experience, as for a decade and a half I saw every sort of corporate chicanery and statistical tomfoolery. The test-scoring industry seemed focused on getting deadlines met, projects completed, and scores put on tests, but only then was any thought given to meaningful scores being put on them.

14/  A Florida DEP [Department of Environmental Protection] official was suspended after she refused a permit to a North Florida ranch trying to declare a dry area a wetland......

It's a complex story, but shows the routine corruption of anything environmental in Rick Scott's Florida......

Florida's top state wetlands expert has been suspended after she refused to issue a permit on a controversial project — one that she said her boss was willing to bend the rules to approve.
The project: turning a North Florida pine plantation into a business that attempts to make up for wetlands that are wiped out by new roads and development. At stake: millions of dollars in wetland "credits" that can be sold to government and developers.
The problem, according to a May 9 memo from Department of Environmental Protection wetlands expert Connie Bersok, is that the owners want the DEP to give them lots of wetland credits for land that isn't wet.
After being told by Deputy Secretary Jeff Littlejohn to ignore the rules she had followed on other permits, Bersok wrote, "I hereby state my objection to the intended agency action and refusal to recommend this permit for issuance."
Two days later, Bersok was suspended pending an investigation, her personnel file shows. She declined to comment for this article without DEP permission. DEP officials would not allow a reporter to speak with her. A spokeswoman would not discuss her case.

15/  And more on Florida, this time the purge of the voter rolls by Rick Scott - Rachael Maddow with a wonderful analysis of how Jeb Bush stole the 2000 election for his idiot brother, and now the Rickster is trying to do it again for our pet Mormon.......

Todays Jewish joke

A woman goes to her rabbi with a serious problem.

Her two female parrots have picked up a bad habit. Any time she has visitors, the two parrots embarrass her by saying, in unison, "Hi ! We're prostitutes. Want to have some fun?"

To her surprise, the rabbi breaks into a smile, explaining that he has two male parrots which he has trained to pray and who've become very observant, spending much of the day praying in their cage.

He's confident that if the woman brings her two parrots over to his house, his two parrots will exert such a positive influence that her birds will turn into model parrots.

The next day the woman drives over to the rabbi's house and brings her two parrots into his home. As she looks around, she notices a large cage with two parrots, each wearing a little yarmulke while they rock back and forth in prayer.

Sure enough, as soon as she places her female parrots in the cage, they shout out to their male counterparts: "Hi! We're prostitutes. Want to have some fun ?"

One of the rabbi's parrots immediately turns to the other, squawking: "Moishe, put the fucking book down. Our prayers have been answered!"

Todays drinking and driving joke

I would like to share an experience with you, about drinking and driving.

As you well know, some of us have been known to have had brushes with the authorities
on our way home from the odd social sessions over the years.

A couple of nights ago, I was out for a few drinks with some friends at the Marriott Hotel and had a few too many beers and some rather nice red wine.

Knowing full well I may have been slightly over the limit, I did something
I've never done before: I took a bus home.

Sure enough I passed a police road block but as it was a bus they waved it past.

I arrived home safely without incident,
which was a real surprise as I have never driven a bus before and am not
sure where I got it.
