Davids Daily Dose - Tuesday March 22nd

I know, I know......

According to Republicans we're broke, so savage cuts are coming for Federal spending......but not for the Military, Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid which is about 86% of the budget. Any initiative to look at health care spending to see what works is met with cries of "death panels", and the Pentagon seems to be off limits even though it is widely known military spending is bloated and wasteful. We already spend more than the rest of the world combined on defense.

So it was good to find this most interesting analysis of weapons systems ordered and being worked on by the Pentagon that are totally, completely and absolutely useless. Unnecessary. Expensive. A waste of our resources.

And defended viciously by hordes of lobbyists and corrupt politicians, which means they will never be cancelled. Imagine how getting rid of these boondoggles would free up funds to pay for......take your pick of worthy causes, which would include paying down the deficit.

So.....Republicans? Step up and cancel some military spending? C'mon now.....

When you open the article, click on the chart on the left to see the projects swallowing our money.....

AS our government teeters on the brink of a shutdown, and Congress and the president haggle over spending cuts, the Pentagon budget should be scoured for places where significant reductions may be made. Not the handful of trims alluded to by Defense Secretary Robert Gates — $78 billion over the next five years, with these savings simply used to shore up spending on other acquisitions — but major cuts to systems that don’t work very well or that are not really going to be needed for decades to come.

Notice how almost every TV newscast has opinions from people in the street? Onion News has their own panel of average Americans on hand....in a cage....Brooke Alvarez asks for their feedback.....a funny 2 minutes..........

Jon Stewart is back after a week off, and he starts with a good one - "Don't We Already Have Two Wars?" He gets in some great zingers...Four minutes.......

Stewart's other complaint, aside from the fact that "Operation Odyssey Dawn" sounds like a YES album, is that we constantly hear our government say that we are out of money. How can we afford to bomb another country? Haven't we been hearing for weeks that Wisconsin teachers will lose their jobs because there isn't enough money? Stewart saw hypocrisy:
"You can't simultaneously fire teachers and Tomahawk missiles."

If you have the time, click on the follow-up with Aasif Manvi as the Daily Show Senior Libya Correspondent - a very funny 3 minutes......

And a joke.....

A New Zealand man with a sheep on a leash walks into the bedroom where his wife is lying in bed and says: "Honey, this is the cow I make love to when you have a headache."

His Australian wife, lying in the bed reading a book, looks up and says, "If you weren't such an idiot, you'd know that's a sheep, not a cow."

The Guy replies, "If you weren't such a presumptuous bitch, you'd realize I was talking to the Sheep."
